Within the tropics there are different vegetation zones. These depend on the time in which to the plants enough water is available to the growth. One makes a distinction after number *arid and **humid months:

* arid = humidification is greater than the anual precipitations -> dry
** humid = anual precipitations are greater than humidification -> wet

Humid savanna

Spread: Africa, Asia, Australia, India, Southamerica
Climate: 7–9½ humid months
Annual rainfall: 1000–1500 mm Ø
Vegetation: up to 6 m hight, evergreen grasses, lightly closed savanna forest, Galleryforests at rivers.
Usage: rainfed agriculture

Dry savanna

Climate: 4,5-7 humid months
Annual rainfall: 500–1000 mm Ø
Vegetation: breasthigh grasses, light tree population.

Thornsavanna

Climate: 2–4,5 humid months
