For country identification, meteoblue use the ISO 3166 coding of the ISO (International organization for Standardization).  This is an internationally accepted convention for country definitions , which is continously updated.
ISO 3166 defines the codes for the representation of names of countries, territories or areas of geographical interest, and their subdivisions, namely

• Country name
• Country code (2 digits);
• Country code (3 digits);
• Country code status;
  

These codes are used to assign and retrieve information about locations and places .

Country information is used for

• identifying places,
• assigning timezones,
• naming of maps;
• aggregation of me-T☼-u information;

and other purposes.
