meteoblue launches a new AI for temperature prediction

After two years of development, we have released the meteoblue Learning Multi-model (MLM). The MLM uses over 25 different forecast models as well as observations from over 50'000 stations to compute a most likely consensus forecast.

In summer of 2018, Europe experienced an unusual heat wave. These situations are difficult to forecast, because statistical methods are not be properly trained to such extreme events. However, the MLM is doing an remarkable job even in this situation.
We routinely test our global forecasts against more than 50'000 weather stations and the maps below indicate if our forecasts were too warm (red) or too cold (blue); light green and yellow are good forecasts. In the top left of the images, we have summarized the performance with mean and RMS errors and with counts at how many locations the forecasts had errors smaller than 1.5, 2 or 3°C at the given forecast hour, shown on the top right of the image. A good forecast is generally defined as being within 2°C errors and MLM mastered this task for almost 80% of the locations 3 days ahead. Current forecast methods (MOS) achieved only 53%.

The verification shows that the heatwave on 26 July 2018 was forecasted one to four days ahead.

meteoblue at the Meteorological Technology World Expo 2018

meteoblue is present at the Meteorological Technology World Expo since the first year of 2011 - a founding member, so to speak. We have set up our 2018 stand with several videos watched by many visitors, who received online demos and several product presentations.

Customers and partners had particular interest in our new MLM forecast and history+, giving access to the largest world-wide hourly weather data-set available online. Many other areas of interest were discussed. Our offer was very favorably received, and that give us confidence to further developing and bringing our services to more users.

meteoblue DAY

This year, we met at the highest weather measuring station in the canton of Basel: the Swisscom transmission tower, where we enjoyed Alphorn music, several presentations of founders, contributors and customers, and a gorgeous view.

This gave us the opportunity to see our contributions to modern weather services and understand the wishes for the future, and was enhanced by a gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape, clouds and sunset (as predicted by our simulations). We hope to be able to serve you even better in the future.
