Wintertime in the northern hemisphere is usually not the season for gliding. To bridge the winter and not get out of flying practice, the "Luftsportverein Aue Hattorf” organised an online gliding competition.

On Tuesday the weather is changing with a mix of clear and cloudy skies and a chance of snow. Only few sunny spells are forecast. A very high chance of Precipitation near 90% is forecast. Temperatures peaking at 7 °F. At night and for the afternoon winds near gale force (32 to 39 mph). Tuesday morning winds reach gale force speeds, breaking off twigs from trees (39 to 47 mph). From time to time gusts could reach up to 44 mph. Winds blowing from Northwest. The weather forecast for Făgăraș Mountains for Tuesday can be accurate in parts but deviations are expected. The real-time satellite image combines visible light during daytime with infrared radiation during nighttime. At night, the image is not dark as infrared radiation can detect temperature differences. Unfortunately, low clouds and fog are difficult to distinguish from ground temperatures and thus can be almost invisible during the night. Meteosat satellite images for Europe are updated in real-time every 5 minutes. GOES-16/GOES-17 (North & South America) and Himawari (Asia) images update every 10 minutes.
Precipitation is estimated from radar and satellites. Precipitation estimates from satellites are less accurate at night than during daytime. Orange crosses mark places where lightning was detected (over Europe).
