Hurricane Lee and Hurricane Margot

UPDATE: Hurricane Lee is expected to reach the US mainland between Saturday and Sunday with heavy wind and rain.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, Hurricane Lee reached storm category 1, weakening while moving over the Atlantic Ocean. However, this it is still classified as a hurricane and therefore, strong winds are expected for Saturday on Sunday for the coastal regions of Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, as can be seen in our wind animation.

The National Weather Service issued severe weather warnings for those regions predicting strong wind, especially for Saturday (2023-09-16).

Margot developed into a hurricane, which is still over the Atlantic, causing high waves in the region of the Portuguese archipelago. Luckily, this hurricane is expected to weaken during the next few days, becoming classified as a tropical storm by Sunday (2023-09-17).

Hurricane Lee formed on the 5th of September on the west of the Cape Verde archipelago. Lee is heading generally northwest and is currently located north of the French West Indies. Check out our maps to see the expected developments of the hurricane. You can follow Hurricane Lee on our wind animation map. The first image shows Hurricane Lee above the French West Indies on the left and Tropical Storm Margot (right) in the eastern Atlantic on Monday (2023-09-11). Margot is also expected to develop into a hurricane in the next few days.

Lee's intensity fluctuates as it moves across the Atlantic. Last week, it reached category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with winds of over 250 km/h. At the end of last week, the hurricane weakened to category 3 (winds between 178 and 210 km/h) but is likely to intensify again. It is currently causing heavy swells in the Caribbean and is, as you can see on our wave Height map, likely to bring extremely high waves and currents to the east coast of the United States, especially on Friday, as shown on the last screenshot.

We recommend using our wind animation, weather warnings and satellite images always to follow the latest developments. Stay safe!
