SNOW FOR THE PANHANDLE INTO EARLY WEEK
Cold, stable, dry air moving in from Canada is currently preventing most of the moisture from reaching the Gustavus, Juneau, Hoonah, Pelican, and Haines areas. The lack of saturation is causing the snow to fall as fine flakes, limiting accumulation. This cold & dry air is continuing to push southward. Therefore, the Winter Storm Warning for Hoonah & the Winter Weather Advisory for Pelican are being allowed to expire.
The arctic boundary is currently coming up on the Kake / Petersburg area, with snow expected to become the more dominant precipitation type in Kake & Petersburg in the next few hours. The next system moving up from the south for Monday looks to bring moderate-to-heavy, short-duration rates to primarily the northern half of Prince of Wales Island, Wrangell, and Petersburg. The band of snow is expected to move northward during the day Monday, with the high uncertainty being how far north the deeper moisture will move north.
-
WHAT: Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of up to 5 inches.
-
WHERE: Northern half of Prince of Wales Island or areas above 500 ft.
-
WHEN: From 3 AM to 3 PM AKST Monday.
-
IMPACTS: Travel could be difficult.
-
ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Heaviest precipitation is expected to begin as snow and transition to a mix between Craig and Kasaan above 500 ft. Heavy precipitation will move northward during the morning hours as all snow, with the mix transitioning back to snow by the late afternoon to evening hours. Highest accumulations will be in the interior of Prince of Wales Island. Craig, Klawock, and Hydaburg precipitation type is expected to primarily be rain.
