A flood alert has been issued. Due to spring tides, higher than normal tides may lead to flooding. The highest tide level during the day on Friday is expected to be at Coastline from Gretna to Silloth between 11:45 AM and 03:45 PM today 20/09/2024. We do not expect this lunchtime tide to cause any flooding. Tonight's high tide could again have impacts, and so this flood alert remains in place. We have closed flood gates at Sea Dyke and Skinburness Marsh and these will remain closed throughout the high tide cycle. Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous. This message will be updated by 5:00 PM on 20/09/2024, or as the situation changes.

- In rural locations, farmers should consider moving livestock and equipment away from areas likely to flood.
- Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water - 30 cm of fast-flowing water can move a car and 6 inches can knock an adult off their feet.
- Flood water is dangerous and may be polluted. Wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been in contact with it.
