A front accompanied by a band of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms moves east across the upper North Island today. This afternoon and into this evening there is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms from Northland to the north of Taranaki and also the west of the Coromandel Peninsula with localised downpours bringing rainfall intensities of 25 to 40 mm/h. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. For information on preparing for and keeping safe during a storm, see the Civil Defence Get Ready website
Periods of heavy rain with thunderstorms and localised downpours, and amounts may approach warning criteria. Rain easing from the west this evening. Note, a warning is in place for Taranaki Maunga. Chance of upgrading to a Warning: Moderate.
Action: Monitor for updates.
