A front is forecast to move eastwards over Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, and Coromandel Peninsula north of Whangamata during Sunday night and the early hours of Monday morning, bringing rain. Between 8pm Sunday and 5am Monday there is a moderate risk of both thunderstorms and localised downpours embedded within this rain. Thunderstorms are expected to enhance local rainfall rates (up to 25 mm/h), and localised downpours will generate rainfall rates of 25 to 40 mm/h. Note that localised downpours may occur whether or not thunderstorms occur. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. For information on preparing for and keeping safe during a storm, see the Civil Defence Get Ready website
A period of heavy rain, with thunderstorms and localised downpours possible. Amounts may approach warning criteria, and even exceed them in localised areas. Rain easing from the southwest overnight. Note: A Severe Thunderstorms Watch is also in force. Chance of upgrading to a Warning: Moderate.
Action: Monitor for updates.
