For ALPINE PEAKS above 1900 metres: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS in excess of 125 km/h are likely today. The risk of DAMAGING WIND GUSTS is expected to ease during the late evening and into early Sunday morning. For remaining areas (below 1900 metres): Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 to 100 km/h are also likely about mostly elevated terrain in the southern ranges from late this morning, but also possible about lower lying areas of the South Coast. Winds are expected to ease this evening. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS in excess of 90 km/h are also possible with showers and thunderstorms across much of the state today. A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if this occurs. Locations which may be affected include Eden, Cooma, Braidwood, Bega, Moruya Heads and Bombala. 100 km/h was recorded at Thredbo at 7:19 am.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.
