16:00 MDT Mon Mar 16 2026 The Flathead Avalanche Center in Hungry Horse has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for the following areas:
NWS Missoula MT - MTZ001 (MTZ001),MTZ002 (MTZ002)

WHAT: The avalanche danger may rise to high in the next 24 hours due to rising freezing levels and rain on snow.

WHERE: The Whitefish, Swan, Flathead, and Apgar Ranges, and the Lake McDonald Valley and Marias Pass regions in Glacier National Park.

WHEN: In effect from Mon 16:00 MDT to Tue 16:00 MDT.

IMPACTS: Rising freezing levels may cause widespread areas of unstable snow. The avalanche danger may rise to High (Level 4 of 5). Wet snow avalanches may occur on all aspects. Avalanches may also fail deep in the snowpack, causing very large and destructive avalanches.

PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS,Very dangerous avalanche conditions may develop. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run down to valley floors or flat terrain.
