SNOW FOR THE PANHANDLE OVER THE WEEKEND
- A long duration snow event is ongoing across the panhandle this weekend. For today, the second round of snow is expected, bringing moderate to heavy snow to the central panhandle, from the Sumner Strait area to the Icy Strait corridor area, including Juneau. Multiple bands of moderate to heavy snow will move up the panhandle during the day, associated with multiple waves aloft. Strongest snow rates are looking increasingly likely near the Icy Strait corridor this evening, associated with the second wave of precipitation from the south. Highest uncertainty with snow amounts is near Petersburg and Kake, where warm temperature aloft may limit snow ratios, therefore limiting snow amounts.
-
WHAT: Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph near Bartlett Cove.
-
WHERE: Glacier Bay including Gustavus.
-
WHEN: From 9 AM Sunday to 6 AM AKST Monday.
-
IMPACTS: Travel could be very difficult.
-
ADDITIONAL DETAILS: The first round of snowfall will continue to taper off overnight Saturday, but a second round of heavier snowfall is expected to impact the central panhandle by Sunday morning. Main forecast challenge is moisture availability, which could limit snowfall totals.
