ESFBIS Due to a fair amount of runoff having been generated by melting snow and ice by recent warm temperatures, stream gages are recording rises along many western and central North Dakota creeks and rivers. While it is unlikely that there is enough volume in this runoff to create flood concerns, some streams such as the Knife, Cannonball, Heart, Cedar Creek, and Spring Creek are at a somewhat elevated risk of ice jams if the ice becomes mobilized. Similarly, the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers in Montana are experiencing modest amounts of runoff that are causing those rivers to rise as well. These, and other rivers, where outdoor enthusiasts are ice fishing or enjoying other winter activities are encouraged to be very cautious out on the ice. Quick rises in water levels create very hazardous conditions along the shoreline at first, and can even cause the ice to breakup and mobilize. The conditions for continued melting of the generally modest snowpack are expected to remain across most of western and central North Dakota into the second full week of February. Anyone noticing an ice jam is encouraged to report them to their local emergency management officials.
