A BAND OF ORGANIZED SHOWERS WILL MOVE OVER SOUTHERN PANHANDLE THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY
- A weakening area of low pressure just west of southern Baranof Island will continue drifting to the south through tonight. On the east side of this low pressure system, bands of snowfall will move southwest to northeast across the southern Alaska Panhandle. The snow showers should become less numerous as the evening progresses and the area of low pressure weakens.
-
WHAT: Snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to 3 inches.
-
WHERE: City and Borough of Wrangell and City of Hyder.
-
WHEN: Until 10 PM AKDT this evening.
-
IMPACTS: Potential need for snow removal, as well as impacts to travel by land and air due to periods of reduced visibility and slick roads.
-

An incoming front will bring widespread moderate to heavy snowfall back across the southern panhandle starting Sunday morning. As the front pushes inland, forecasters are expecting a transition period to a rain and snow mix, or potentially all rain, across Prince of Wales Island, Annette Island, and Ketchikan by Sunday afternoon with temperatures reaching into the upper 30s to low 40s along the coast. Winds will increase through the early afternoon, with strongest wind gusts up to 65 mph across southern portions of Prince of Wales Island, diminishing into early Sunday evening. Current snowfall forecast amounts of 3 to 6 inches are expected through Monday afternoon, with higher amounts possible within interior Prince of Wales Island. After the main storm system dissipates Monday evening, an active snow pattern will continue though most of next week as a large area of low pressure over the Gulf of Alaska sends persistent but intermittent bands of snow showers across the area. Snowfall accumulations will be highly variable Tuesday onward, but forecasters cannot rule out some places seeing an additional 4 to 10 inches of snowfall through Friday.
