Tropical Cyclone Fina, category 2, is impacting the Cobourg Peninsula, extending to other parts of the northwest Top End during Saturday.
NTES advises people in the path of the dangerous cyclone about the Cobourg Peninsula, including Minjilang and Cape Don, should stay calm and remain in a secure shelter while the destructive winds continue. SIGNIFICANT RISES IN CREEKS AND RIVERS LIKELY FROM LATE FRIDAY Tropical Cyclone Fina is moving slowly southwest and is expected to strengthen during Friday. Fina is forecast to approach the Cobourg Peninsula and Tiwi Islands Friday night before continuing southwest through the Van Diemen Gulf on Saturday and into the southern Timor Sea on Sunday. Most of the North West Coastal Rivers catchments are becoming saturated from the recent showers and storms. Widespread daily rainfall totals over the Flood Watch area during Friday and Saturday are likely to be between 50-200 mm, with isolated totals over 300 mm possible near the path of the cyclone. Further heavy rainfall is possible during Sunday. Significant rises in creeks and rivers and areas of flooding are likely throughout the Flood Watch area from late Friday. Many roads may become impassable and some communities and homesteads may become isolated. A Tropical Cyclone Advice and the associated Forecast Track Map remain current.
