Historical weather data since 1940 with history+

Our history+ tool has recently received an extensive update. In addition, we enhanced the application of history+ in the field of agriculture.

In our previous history+ update in March, we pushed the range of our historical data back to 1960. Since then, we have added two additional decades, history+ now delivers hourly weather data since 1940. history+ is our unique data interface that facilitates access to various data analysis tools, including wind roses, risk assessments, histograms, and year comparisons. You also have the option to download the data in its raw form.

To summarise, our history+ data analysis tool now includes the following datasets allowing you to compare various data sources and determine the most appropriate one for your specific needs:

  • Local NEMS model with a spatial resolution between 4 and 12 km, with data starting since 2008-2014, depending on the selected location.

  • Global NEMS model that offers complete global coverage without any data gaps, with a 30 km spatial resolution. The hourly data is available from 1984 onwards.

  • ERA5 reanalysis model with 30 km resolution, available globally since 1940. This dataset is produced by combining measurement, observational and simulation data, and applying data assimilation techniques to describe actual weather occurrences accurately.

Our weather data are used for a large variety of different use cases. 

One focus is the agricultural sector, where weather significantly influences daily decisions. We created a video describing how history+ is used in the agricultural industry. For example, various weather risks can be analysed with our risk assessments. One risk is drought, which can be deeply investigated with our water capacity risk assessment. It visualises how the risk developed over more than 30 years, thereby supporting farmers in taking important weather-dependent decisions.

Another key function is our crop risk analysis tool, which considers several crop-relevant weather risks. By correlating various crop risks, such as heat or cold, with high-precision weather information, this tool assists farmers in planning their crop cycles and monitoring different crop risks.
