Modelling weather markets

Private weather services have been growing vigorously over the past decades, developing and offering value-adding services for new customer segments. A workshop with students has revealed some fundamental principles.

meteoblue has been cooperating with the DHBW Lörrach for a decade, and also hosts students in a variety of disciplines.

On 10 August 2018, students from the DHBW Lörrach Circle of Excellence took the opportunity, in a workshop with the meteoblue team, to study weather service markets in different country markets and their development, and discover opportunities for private weather service providers.

The students analyzed the characteristics of different market types in working groups and worked out possible market development and entry scenarios. The greatest added value was achieved with a state-owned weather service that operates a solid state infrastructure for weather measurement, alerting and research, whose data are made publicly available (Open Government Data) and which does not provide commercial services.
