Perfect skiing conditions in the Alps

In the Austrian Alps, it snowed last week. The snowfall creates optimal conditions for skiing.

Last weekend, the precipitation pattern in the Alps was particularly characterised by a low-pressure area east of Germany and Austria, bringing a lot of moisture and precipitation. Towards Sunday, a cold front with air masses of polar origin and showery precipitation moved south, which led to a drop in temperature and the continuation of accumulated snowfall and snow chaos even at lower altitudes in the Alps.

In the meantime, several high-pressure areas have spread over large parts of Europe. The high-pressure area over Central Europe currently provides widespread low precipitation conditions, lots of sunshine and clear, frosty nights. Here, different models are in alignment as can be seen in our MultiModel diagram.

The snow amounts in the Alps can be well observed with our snow maps.

The forecast shows that the temperature remains in the minus-degree range, so the accumulated snow will ensure a pleasant skiing experience. Towards the end of the week, however, temperatures rise even at high altitudes. Looking at our temperature map for the Alps for the next few days, you can observe a temperature rise. The maximum temperature in the Alps for Monday next week is 10° C in the valleys and up to 6° C in higher elevations.

Due to the absence of precipitation, the snow mass is expected to decrease again in large parts of the Alps. It may be increasingly overcast in the Eastern Alps at the weekend.

In our weather maps you can also find more information about the predicted daily snowfall or the hourly snowfall amount.

The snowfall can also be observed on our webcams. We have compared the location of Dienten am Hochkönig (Austria) before and after the snowfall of the last days.

Last week there was a light blanket of snow in Dienten am Hochkönig, as the webcam screenshot from 30-01-2023 shows. Now the village is covered in snow, as seen on the screenshot from 06-02-2023. The bench still visible on the bottom left of the first webcam screenshot has been completely snowed in over the last few days.

The fresh snow invites winter sports enthusiasts to plan their next outdoor activity.

You can track the weather conditions for the next days with our 7-day forecast. The Alpine region’s weather will be sunny and mild in the next few days, which you can also see on the sunshine hours map.
