«Capturing Climate Change» Photo Contest 2024 – Silver Medal

Today it is a pleasure to announce the second-place winner of our Photo Contest 2024 «Capturing Climate Change».

We would like to thank Mr. Holger W. for his wonderful photo that perfectly captures climate change. It is a particularly striking photo as it captures a human footprint left on the ground at a time when it was still wet, which has remained imprinted since the dry weather arrived.

We found it particularly appropriate to the theme because, as is now commonly known, the human footprint on the environment and climate is of considerable importance and this photo perfectly evokes this concept.

The photo was taken in the summer of 2022 in northern Germany. This information allowed us to carry out a search using our historical maps which established that, particularly in August 2022, temperature anomalies occurred in that specific area of Germany.

As you can see from our map, average temperatures deviated by 2 to 3.5 degrees from the average for that period across northern Germany. The temperature anomaly map in the screenshot analyses the temperatures from July 2022 and compares them with the base temperature, which is based on 30 years of temperature data, which are also illustrated in our climate diagrams.

This map could be a clear indication of the effects of climate change and fully confirm the weather conditions that made it possible to take this beautiful photo.

We would like to thank Mr. Holger W. again for his participation in the Photo Contest 2024 and for his contribution.
