تجمع صورة القمر الصناعي في الوقت الفعلي بين الضوء المرئي نهارًا والأشعة تحت الحمراء ليلًا. ليلاً، لا تكون الصورة مظلمة لأن الأشعة تحت الحمراء يمكنها اكتشاف فروق درجات الحرارة. للأسف، يصعب تمييز السحب المنخفضة والضباب عن درجات حرارة سطح الأرض، ولذلك قد تكون شبه غير مرئية أثناء الليل. يتم تحديث صور القمر الصناعي Meteosat لأوروبا في الوقت الفعلي كل 5 دقائق. أما صور GOES-16/GOES-17 (أمريكا الشمالية والجنوبية) وHimawari (آسيا) فتُحدَّث كل 10 دقائق.

يتم تقدير الهطول بواسطة الرادار والأقمار الصناعية. وتكون تقديرات الهطول من الأقمار الصناعية أقل دقة ليلاً منها نهارًا.
