The Flood Warning continues for the following rivers in Colorado

Elk River at Milner affecting Routt County.

  • Warm temperatures and potential for rain falling on snow will accelerate snow melt across the Elkhead and Park Ranges through this weekend. Expect increasing flows on many creeks and streams across the Upper Yampa River Basin.

  • WHAT: Minor flooding caused by snowmelt is expected.

  • WHERE: Elk River near Milner, CO.

  • WHEN: Until late tomorrow morning.

  • IMPACTS:

At 7.0 feet: Low land flooding is occurring along the reach of the Elk River. Water has reached the foundations of some ranch buildings and homes near the County Road 42 Bridge.

At 7.5 feet: Lower portions of 42 road near the Elk River bridge are starting to flood.

At 7.7 feet: Water is approaching homes on the south side of US40 near the confluence of the East Fork Elk River and the Yampa River.

  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
    • At 11:30 AM MDT Friday the stage was 6.2 feet.
    • Bankfull stage is 6.5 feet.
    • Forecast: The river will oscillate above Action Stage with a maximum value of 7.3 feet tomorrow morning.
    • Flood stage is 7.5 feet.
    • Flood History: This crest compares to a previous crest of 7.3 feet on 05/24/2005.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE COLORADO AVALANCHE INFORMATION CENTER.

SPECIAL AVALANCHE ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM SUNDAY

  • WHAT: Near-record temperatures and a deeper-than-normal June snowpack will result in large, potentially destructive, wet avalanches through the weekend.
  • WHERE: The mountains of Colorado above about 11,500 feet where there is an existing snowpack.

  • WHEN: Through Sunday evening

  • IMPACTS: Large wet avalanches may release naturally threatening backcountry travelers attempting to climb or ride on high peaks in Colorado
