Satelitní snímek v reálném čase kombinuje viditelné světlo během dne s infračerveným zářením během noci. V noci není obraz tmavý, protože infračervené záření dokáže detekovat teplotní rozdíly. Nízká oblačnost a mlha se bohužel těžko odlišují od pozemních teplot, a proto mohou být během noci téměř neviditelné. Satelitní snímky z Meteosatu pro Evropu jsou aktualizovány v reálném čase každých 5 minut. Snímky z GOES-16/GOES-17 (Severní a Jižní Amerika) a Himawari (Asie) jsou aktualizovány) každých 10 minut.
Srážky se odhadují z radarů a družic. Odhady srážek ze satelitů jsou v noci méně přesné než ve dne.
