Funnel clouds are possible due to atmospheric conditions found along a boundary that stretches across the I-70 corridor today. These funnel clouds are not associated with thunderstorms and form on the back side of isolated, generally light showers. These showers increase the relative humidity below their bases, which make circulations visible in the form of funnel clouds. Other showers in the area likely have these same circulations, but the ingredient of the increased local humidity may not be present. Funnels such as these are typically brief, drop only a few hundred feet from the cloud base, and rarely become a tornado or cause damage.
