Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until this storm passes.

  • WHAT: Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.

  • WHERE: Portions of northeast New Jersey, including the following counties, Essex, Hudson and Union and southeast New York, including the following counties, New York (Manhattan) and Richmond (Staten Island).

  • WHEN: Until 1245 AM EDT.

  • IMPACTS: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

    • At 1047 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen.
    • Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding.
    • Some locations that will experience flooding include, Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Bayonne, Hoboken, Linden, Orange, Secaucus, Harrison, Todt Hill, Huguenot, Union City, SoHo, Port Richmond, Kearny, Tottenville, Tompkinsville, Oakwood, Battery Park and East Orange.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

  • WHERE: Portions of northeast New Jersey, including the following areas, Eastern Bergen, Eastern Essex, Eastern Passaic, Eastern Union, Hudson, Western Essex and Western Union and southeast New York, including the following areas, Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Northern Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Southern Queens and Southern Westchester.

  • WHEN: Through Wednesday evening.

  • IMPACTS: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

    • A slow moving low pressure system will bring multiple rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms to the area today through Wednesday. Average rainfall amounts are expected to be between 2.5 and 3.5 inches with localized higher amounts. Peak hourly rainfall rates could be as high as 2 to 3 inches in the heaviest showers and thunderstorms. Most of the rainfall is expected to fall through tonight, however flooding is still possible on Wednesday.
