meteoblue live weather data in Microsoft Flight Simulator

In June 2020, we announced our cooperation with Microsoft delivering meteoblue weather data to the unique MS Flight Simulator. This partnership was further extended by adding live weather data to the game.

The partnership began in 2018, when we started innovating to develop the weather technologies needed to provide real-time weather experience in the game. The Microsoft Flight Simulator is a well-known home flight simulator program, offering a hyper-realistic flying experience with many unique functions. Since weather is an essential factor in aviation, Microsoft asked meteoblue to provide daily updates of weather data, to create realistic flying scenarios corresponding to the actual weather.

In 2020, those actual weather conditions were introduced into the game: in that year, the game was rated among the top 3 games worldwide.

Microsoft Flight Simulator "pilots" loved the weather updates and wanted more: They expected the weather to be identical to what they saw when looking outside their windows. To meet that expectation, we continued developments to introduce weather updates in hourly, and lately 15-minute, intervals to the game, based on real-time satellite imagery and measurements. This has enabled the game to almost perfectly mirror the weather reality, creating unique opportunities to fly through real-time weather conditions at any point on Earth. For example, aircraft enthusiasts explored Hurricane Laura in real-time. The hurricane can also be observed in our historical satellite maps, as shown in the screenshot.
