Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory. The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force. This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us. The tropical storm over the northern part of the South China Sea was named as Maliksi. At 4 p.m., Maliksi was estimated to be about 290 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.6 degrees north 112.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move north at about 15 kilometres per hour edging closer to the western coast of Guangdong. According to the present forecast track, Maliksi will make landfall at the western part of Guangdong this evening to early tomorrow morning. Its associated strong winds will gradually affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. Local winds are turning southerlies gradually and are expected to strengthen slightly later. The Observatory will issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3, at 4:40 p.m. Satellite imageries showed relatively weak convections near the centre of Maliksi. However, there are extensive intense rainbands to its south. Although Maliksi will move across inland of western Guangdong, the associated rainbands will still affect Hong Kong. There will be heavy showers and strong winds. There will be swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
