- Strong southwest winds with low humidity, hot temperatures, and deep mixing today will increase the risk for rapid fire spread over far west central and northwest New Mexico. Drier air spreads eastward across the state in the wake of a dry frontal passage Wednesday. Critical conditions will focus over northeastern New Mexico on Wednesday, but forecast wind speeds are marginal for rapid fire spread. Dry lightning strikes today could start fires that then spread rapidly Wednesday in response to increasingly dry and windy conditions.
