The Ministry of Environment and Tourism, through the Department of Meteorological Services, wishes to advise members of the public of a significant increase in temperatures across the country. Very hot to extremely hot temperatures, ranging from 36°C to 40°C, are expected over most parts of the country, with the highest temperatures likely over the northern parts of Botswana. These conditions are expected to persist from 13th to 22nd October 2026. The prevailing high temperatures are associated with persistent northerly winds, bringing in hot air into the country, together with a high-pressure system in the middle levels of the atmosphere. This combination promotes the accumulation of heat near the Earth's surface, resulting in persistently high temperatures.
Members of the public are therefore advised to take the following precautionary measures to protect themselves against the effects of extreme heat: Drink plenty of water and other suitable fluids regularly to remain hydrated. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest parts of the day. Stay in shaded or cool areas whenever possible. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella when outdoors. Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
