Earth Day Photo Competition – Winner 3

We are delighted to have received a large number of breathtaking images for our Earth Day photo contest, and have now chosen the top three.

This particular image was captured in Bialystok , Poland, on the afternoon of the 18th of July, 2015. The photograph showcases two remarkable features:

Firstly, one can observe an assortment of meteorological instruments, designed to record various weather parameters such as temperature, precipitation, wind, and radiation. For those interested in learning more about these measurement devices and the data they collect, our dedicated help pages provide ample information.

Secondly, the sky presents an extraordinary display with its unique cloud formation. Though it may appear as a photomontage, this is, in fact, a well-known yet unusual and not entirely understood cloud phenomenon known as "Mammatus clouds". These typically form following a thunderstorm, as a result of air masses with differing temperatures and humidity levels being transported. The descending air masses accumulate beneath the cloud base, giving rise to these characteristic pillow-like structures. The spectacle becomes even more striking when the sun begins to shine upon the scene. What a splendid image indeed!
