AVALANCHE WARNING ISSUED BY THE IDAHO PANHANDLE AVALANCHE CENTER

07:00 PST Wed Dec 10 2025 The Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center in Sandpoint has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING for the following areas:

NWS Missoula MT - MTZ001 (MTZ001)

NWS Spokane WA - ID 017 (Bonner County),ID 021 (Boundary County)

  • WHAT: An Avalanche Warning is in effect from Wednesday 7 AM to Thursday 7 AM. Very dangerous avalanche conditions will reemerge from another round of heavy rain and strong winds - this time climbing up to 8,000 feet. It will be very easy to trigger avalanches large enough to bury or kill you, and many will release spontaneously. Avoid travel in avalanche terrain during this period.

  • WHERE: The Selkirk Mountains, and West and East Cabinet Mountains above 4,000 feet.

  • WHEN: In effect from Wed 07:00 PST to Thu 07:00 PST.

  • IMPACTS: The next potent atmospheric river will deliver copious amounts of rain to an already stressed snowpack across the mountains of North Idaho and Northwestern Montana. The rain line will spike to around 8,000 feet on Wednesday and quickly overload buried weak snow layers. It will be very likely for backcountry travelers to trigger dangerous avalanches and natural avalanches are likely. Avalanches will break wide across terrain features and run long distances to lower elevation slopes.

  • PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS,Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended during this period.
