While parts of the central and southern panhandle continue to dig out from the latest storm that is coming to a close, our next system is on the horizon already. This system looks to potentially bring accumulating snow the central panhandle and as far north as the Icy Strait corridor including Juneau. Right now, there is moderate confidence in accumulating snowfall starting Saturday evening for locations such as Petersburg. Farther north, Angoon could see snow starting to fall as soon as late Saturday evening and Sitka looks to potentially get into the snow by early Sunday morning. These locations will likely stay all snow as the warm air associated with this surge of moisture does not appear strong enough to warm up locations north of Sumner Strait. Farther north, the Icy Strait corridor including Juneau continues to have less confidence as there is concerns about the moisture making it far enough north as well as be able to make it through the cold, dry air and reach the surface. If enough moisture is able to make it north, these locations could get in on some potential accumulating snow. But if the moisture struggles to make it far enough north or there is not enough moisture, the Icy Strait corridor could likely see just some light snow accumulations. Forecast confidence is increasing for a potentially impactful snowfall event across the central panhandle beginning late this weekend and continuing into early next week as a heavy precipitation-producing front sweeps north. This precipitation, in combination with persistent cold temperatures, snow will be possible through the central panhandle as far north as the Icy Strait Corridor, including Juneau. Confidence has increased for accumulating snow to move into locations such as Angoon, Sitka, and Tenakee Springs overnight into Sunday morning, before snowfall continues to creep northward through Sunday with moderate to heavy rates potentially continuing into Monday morning. Forecast challenge still remains on how far north the available moisture will reach, as strong, dry outflow winds may limit areas of the northern panhandle to only lighter snow accumulations.
