A flood alert has been issued. The River Ouse is high and rising. Almost a month's rain (57mm) has been recorded at Ardingly on Monday. From 23:00 (06/05/2024) the lower River Ouse will be higher than normal, and near the tops of the banks. Flooding could affect fields, rural roads and gardens of Whitfeld Lane and Ivors Lane Hamsey. In Lewes, a small amount of water could affect Railway Lane, Eastgate Wharf, near the Fire Station and the Pells area, and gardens of Riverdale and Malling Deanery near Willeys Bridge. Rain has now cleared the area, and high pressure, bringing settled and dry weather, is now forecast for the next five days. Tuesday morning's tide at 11:00 (07/05/2024) is forecast to be 30cm lower than Monday evening's, however, with the flow coming down the River Ouse, water levels between Barcombe and Newhaven are again expected to be near the tops of the banks. The peak water levels should begin to fall from Wednesday (08/05/2024). Please plan to avoid driving through routes vulnerable to flooding. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast. From 20:00 (06/05/2024) flooding is expected to affect the Anchor Inn, near Barcombe. Flood water will be extensive through fields. Barcombe Mills Road and Anchor Lane are likely to be impassable. From 23:00 (06/05/2024) flood water could begin to approach isolated properties at Barcombe Mills. Rain has now cleared the area, and high pressure, bringing settled dry weather, is forecast for the next five days. The river should begin to fall by 13:00 (07/05/2024), but may not return nearer to normal until 17:00 Wednesday (08/05/2024). River levels could end up similar to those seen in January or February 2024. Some roads may become impassable. Please plan to avoid driving through routes vulnerable to flooding, including Barcombe Mills Road. Flood protection products are recommended to be installed in Barcombe, if you have them. We are operating our structures in Barcombe to help keep the river flowing freely and reduce flood risk. We will update this message by 14:00 on 07/05/2024.

From 14:00 (06/05/2024) minor flooding could affect fields, rural roads, gardens and approach properties at Bridge Cottage and Dean's Water Mill at Lindfield Bridge on the B2028 near Lindfield, and Freshfield Mill Farm, Freshmill and Millers Cottages on Sloop Lane. Roads at Fletching Mill Bridge and Sharpsbridge will be affected. From 20:00 (06/05/2024) Barcombe Mills road could be impassable. Flooding could also affect the Anchor Inn and properties at Barcombe Mills. Rain will continue until 16:00 (06/05/2024). Another 10mm of rain could yet fall. The river should begin to fall by 04:00 (07/05/2024) near Ardingly, but not until midday Tuesday near Barcombe. River levels could remain higher than normal until Wednesday (08/05/2024).
