Periods of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms and/or localised downpours are expected to affect Northland, Auckland and Great Barrier Island this morning. Localised downpours of 25-40 mm/h are possible in some places, which could occur with or without thunderstorms. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain. The severe thunderstorm and downpour risk eases over Northland by 10:30am and Auckland around midday, however there may still be a few further isolated thunderstorms in these areas this afternoon.
