A heavy rain band is expected to move eastwards across the North Island during today. There is mostly a low risk of thunderstorms affecting Northland south of the Bay of Islands this morning and afternoon. However, there is a moderate risk that convection embedded in the rain band will produce localised downpours with rain rates of 25 to 40 mm/h. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. For information on preparing for and keeping safe during a storm, see the Civil Defence Get Ready website
Northeast winds may approach severe gale force in exposed places. Chance of upgrading to a Warning: Moderate. Changes: Removed area northwest of Kawakawa and extend time period.
Action: Monitor for updates.
Expect a further 60 to 90 mm of rain on top of what has already fallen. Peaks rates of 15 to 25 mm/h, but 25 to 40 mm/h possible in localised downpours until this evening. Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible. Chance of upgrading to a Red Warning: Low. Changes: Included southeast Northland.
Action: Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.
