EMS - Following the Science

At the European Meteorological Society Conference in Bonn, scientists discussed making the latest discoveries for atmospheric measurements, modelling, and climate available to end-user communities. meteoblue was the most active company, contributing three posters and three presentations.

The European Meteorological Society Annual Meeting in Bonn, Germany, from 4 to 9 September 2022 aimed at "Connecting communities to deliver seamless weather and climate science and services". Thereby, we can improve the application of meteorological sciences in everyday lives, from using better forecasts over better disaster warnings to preventing and mitigating climate change.

meteoblue contributed three posters:

And 2 presentations:

The first poster of the list was about our latest verification study because meteoblue provides the best-documented accuracy worldwide. For example, in a recent study, the accuracy of more than 1 mm/day of precipitation events was globally analysed by validation at 8'000 official WMO stations. The map shows the raw model with the highest accuracy per selected country. This information helps our customers choose the best model for their particular needs in each region of the world.

The urban climate presentation covers the effect of heat island mitigation measures. A small area („Triangel area“) of 1 hectare in the city centre of Basel was unsealed and planted with 18 young trees beginning of 2021. With the dense city measurement network in Basel, meteoblue could determine an air temperature reduction of 0.3 degrees. Additionally, model simulations were conducted to assess the air temperature reduction by several different urban heat island mitigation strategies (e.g. rooftop greening, the greening of house facades, watering).

Furthermore, through PRIMET, supporting the private sector in meteorology and working to deliver the full value of publicly-funded weather information across Europe, meteoblue also contributed substantially to the most advanced publicly available market study on the "EU Weather markets: an EU-28 perspective from 2010 to 2020 and beyond", showing a 131% growth of the private sector from 2010-2020 in 19 EU countries, and a significant contribution to key industries, such as air and road traffic, and energy management, areas which become even more critical with the current energy shortages.

As the most active company in the 2022 conference, we actively contribute to the overarching goal of "delivering seamless weather and climate science and services" and continue to follow our path to innovate for the good of our customers and stakeholders.
