If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order. Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.

IMPACTS: The cold wind chills as low as 5 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes.

Remain indoors if possible. Cover all exposed skin and limit time outside if you must go out. Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves. Cover outdoor faucets. To prevent water pipes from freezing wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Bring pets indoors, or ensure that they have warm, dry shelter. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
