At 8:28 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain. This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Kettleby to Darlington Provincial Park and is nearly stationary. Hazards: Heavy downpours with rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm possible. 90 km/h wind gusts. Locations impacted include: Richmond Hill, Markham, Oshawa, King City, Aurora and Whitby. ### Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
