Het realtime satellietbeeld combineert zichtbaar licht overdag met infraroodstraling ’s nachts. ’s Nachts is het beeld niet donker, omdat infraroodstraling temperatuursverschillen kan detecteren. Helaas zijn lage bewolking en mist moeilijk te onderscheiden van de temperatuur van het aardoppervlak en kunnen zij ’s nachts vrijwel onzichtbaar zijn. Meteosat-satellietbeelden voor Europa worden in realtime elke 5 minuten bijgewerkt. GOES-16/GOES-17 (Noord- en Zuid-Amerika) en Himawari (Azië) worden elke 10 minuten bijgewerkt.

Neerslag wordt geschat met radar en satellieten. Neerslagschattingen van satellieten zijn ’s nachts minder nauwkeurig dan overdag.
