A moderate risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding is forecast over northern Iowa later today and overnight. Storms will be redeveloping this afternoon, with the heaviest rainfall expected later this evening to early Saturday morning. Some uncertainty remains as to the exact axis of heaviest rainfall, but current indications are that the heaviest rainfall in north central Iowa will be generally between Highway 20 and the Iowa Minnesota border. If you live in or near the watch, please monitor the weather closely this afternoon and tonight. Review flooding safety plans now and be prepared if you must take action.

  • WHAT: Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.

  • WHERE: Portions of central, north central, northeast, northwest, and west central Iowa, including the following counties, in central Iowa, Grundy, Hamilton, Hardin and Webster. In north central Iowa, Butler, Franklin, Humboldt and Wright. In northeast Iowa, Black Hawk and Bremer. In northwest Iowa, Pocahontas. In west central Iowa, Calhoun and Sac.

  • WHEN: From 7 PM CDT this evening through Saturday afternoon.

  • IMPACTS: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible.

  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

    • Expected rainfall totals may reach 3 to 7 inches in some areas with locally higher amounts are possible. Rapid rises in creeks, streams and urban flooding will be possible. Field flooding and washed out county roads will also be possible. Rainfall rates may approach 2 inches per hour in the heavier storms.
