New Meteogram AIR

The Meteogram AIR was the very first launched by meteoblue in 2004. Now, it has received a major design upgrade and additional information specific to aviation, paragliding and other specialists, such as meteorologists, has been added.

Our very first meteogram received an update: our Meteogram AIR

We applied design changes with improved colour for better readability and added the following air stability indices:

  • CAPE: Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) is a measure of instability through the depth of the atmosphere, defining the amount of energy available for convection. The higher the value, the higher the thunderstorm risk.
  • CIN: Convective inhibition represents the energy of an air parcel needed to reach the level of free convection. Heavy thunderstorms are unlikely if the convective inhibition is large.
  • Helicity: This variable provides information on the intensity of rotation found in a storm’s updraft air and is an important indicator for analysing the potential of fast winds.
  • Lifted Index: This is a dimensionless measure of atmospheric instability, expressed as values between -6 and +6.

Forecasts of indices related to air stability make it possible to estimate the risk of convection. Convective forecasts are essential for aviation because they provide pilots and paragliders with critical information to help ensure the safety of their flights and the efficiency of their operations. Thunderstorms can produce turbulence, hail, and lightning all of which can be hazardous for aviation. Furthermore, convective forecasts offer planning certainty to avoid areas of potential thunderstorm activity and ensure safer journeys. More information about these variables and interpretations can be found on our help pages.

We also removed the last diagram of the previous Meteogram AIR, which showed radiation information: radiation is not crucial for aviation, and we now summarise all weather information that are required for aviation purposes. To access the radiation information, we recommend using the following pages:

If you are looking for sunshine durations, please look at our website homepage, which summarises the total sunshine hours for each day in the daily overview. Furthermore, our weather maps are also a great tool to access this information. There, you can easily find sunny locations at one glance.

Our website offers the Meteogram AIR for the next 3 days free of charge. To extend the forecast horizon to 6 days, our point+ premium website subscription is needed, which can also be tested free of charge.

We appreciate your feedback about this update.
