ExtremWetterkongress and KlimaManagementTagung 2024

The ExtremWetterKongress is a leading conference bringing together scientists, media, public organs and customers in Germany since 18 years. meteoblue was there for the 3rd time.

In recent years, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have surged, raising urgent questions about climate change, environmental sustainability, and disaster preparedness. The ExtremWetterKongress (Extreme Weather Congress) has emerged as a critical platform for experts, policymakers, and community leaders to address these pressing issues. This annual conference brings together scientists, meteorologists, urban planners, and representatives from various sectors to discuss strategies for mitigating the impacts of extreme weather on communities, supply chains and ecosystems. In total, more than 700 participants discussed the latest developments in urban planning and climate services.

meteoblue was invited for a keynote talk by our CEO, Dr. Karl G. Gutbrod, on latest developments in the meteoblue City Climate Monitoring System with some new and ground-breaking key messages:

  • Changes in urban climate will increasingly stress people, organisations and infrastructure in urban areas.
  • Urban measurement networks coupled with high-resolution models deliver significantly better and cheaper data about the urban climate than the current methods based purely on simulations and observations.
  • Deploying a measurement network enables further tracking and evaluation of infrastructure changes aimed at improving urban climate.
  • These conclusions are based on 5 years of experience gained by meteoblue in the operation of urban measurement networks in 10 cities in 3 continents.
  • The meteoblue website already offers operational Heat Maps and Urban Wind Maps in high resolution, in real-time, and as forecasts.
  • meteoblue data can easily be integrated into urban digital twins, as well as in the urban planning processes and Citizen-Science Projects.

Additionally, a 90-minute workshop on how high-resolution data can be integrated into digital twins was conducted with scientists and climate adaptation managers of several cities in Germany.

The ExtremWetterKongress stands as a vital forum for tackling one of the most critical issues of our time, the impacts of extreme weather exacerbated by climate change. By bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, the congress not only facilitates the exchange of knowledge and ideas but also fosters a collective commitment to building a more resilient and sustainable future. As we continue to face unprecedented weather challenges, the insights and collaborations emerging from this congress will be essential in shaping effective responses and strategies for communities around the world.

We thank all our visitors at our booth and participants of our workshop for their interest and our partners for their contributions, and look forward to implementing the most modern solutions with our increasing range of partners and customers.
