Storm Ingunn at Norway’s coast

A major storm will hit the West Coast of Norway on Wednesday evening, January 31st 2024.

A major storm is expected to hit the West coast of Norway on Wednesday, January 31st, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms. This storm is triggered by a low-pressure system, Margrit, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The low-pressure system will intensify on Wednesday with a decrease in the pressure in the centerre of the system to around 940 hPa, which will bring humid and warm air from the south to Norway. This air will collide with the cold air in the north, leading to strong winds.

The highest wind speeds are expected along the coast, especially in the provinces of Nordland and Troms and the Western coast of Norway. There, wind gusts of up to 180 kilometres per hour can occur. Inland wind speeds will be slightly lower but still reach up to 100 kilometres per hour.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute “Met.no” has issued a storm warning for these regions. The population is urged to prepare for the storm and heed the warnings. The weather warning is issued for Wednesday and Thursday (2024-01-31 – 2024-02-01).
