2021 meteorological history

With the year-end, meteoblue takes a look back at 2021 meteorological summary and some highlights.

After a year of hard work, we close 2021 by taking a look at our historic model data to detect some high- and lowlights from the 2021 meteorological year.

Temperatures reached above 50°C around the Persian Gulf (guess where?) and in the Sahara, and close to 50°C in Australia, California, India, Uzbekistan and ... Southern Europe, but some other regions also experienced unusually torching temperatures above 40°C, such as parts of USA, Canada, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, Australia and others. Maxima reached above 35°C in large parts of Africa and Europe, as well as in unusual regions, such as Siberia and North of Canada.

Precipitation was, as expected, very unevenly distrrbuted: some regions received nothing, some more than 10'000 mm of precipitation, with a maximum of 16'825 mm - guess where? Some regions experienced severe droughts in 2021, such as Afghanistan, Sahel zone and the Chaco - some others flooding, as in Germany, Brazil, Australia, amongst many others, or record snowfall.

Strong Winds assailed several regions during the year of 2021: Although the worst storms actually stay at sea, several coastlines were battered by windspeeds above 120 km/h, and even some inland areas (American Great Plains, East Andes, Inner China, Mongolia and Siberia experienced winds with more than 100 km/h on a larger scale. Local wind systems, such as jets, squally and tornados , are obviously not included in these summaries, since they occur at much more local scale and can either not be detected or not shown in such a global summary.

Temperatures in 2021 averaged 10.1°C over land, compared with 10.2°C average 2011-2020 and 9.7°C average 1991-2000. The developments for each regioin worldwide can be found on our climate change page.

Our archive will show you many more events pertinent to your local conditions.
