Snow on the Baleares islands

At the beginning of this week, some Balearic islands experienced heavy winds with snowfall. We have analysed the weather situation in more detail and checked the forecast.

Over the past few days, the Mediterranean island of Mallorca has experienced a significant weather event, with a low-pressure system. This weather system brought moist air masses from the north, resulting in a storm with several weather warnings that brought strong winds, precipitation, and cold temperatures to the island. The most impacted area was the Tramuntana, the mountainous region northwest of Mallorca, where a significant amount of snow fell on Monday.

Although the flatlands and beaches experienced less snowfall, the high winds created stormy conditions on the coast, and heavy rainfall led to flooding in many regions. You can analyse the precipitation with our historical satellite and radar map, which reaches back to 2020. You can access them with our point+ subscription. The image shows the radar image from Monday, 2023-02-27, with the heavy precipitation, and the second screenshot shows the wind animation for Tuesday, 2023-02-28.

Now, the storm drifts from the island towards the west, leading to calmer weather in Mallorca.

However, the snow accumulated in the mountainous regions will take some time to melt, and the slight rise in temperature and the storm's end may accelerate the process. The video shows our snow depth map, which confirms the melting of the snow. The snow will be gone by Saturday, leaving Mallorca snow-free again.

This weather event is not uncommon for Mallorca, having a Mediterranean climate characterised by mild winters and hot summers. However, heavy winds, rain, and snow created challenging conditions for locals and tourists alike. Therefore, it is essential to take precautions during extreme weather events to ensure safety and minimise the impact of the weather.

We offer different meteograms that help you to follow the current weather in Mallorca in 3 simple graphs. The meteogram summarises relevant weather information like temperature, precipitation and wind speed.
