Highest resolution satellite images worldwide

meteoblue is proud to be among the first to make highest-resolution cloud cover satellite images with global coverage available to the general public. After our recent introduction of highest-resolution satellite images for Europe and Africa, they are now available for the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, and also cover all oceans. All images are updated every 5 minutes and show cloud cover development in 15-minute time-steps for the past 2 hours.

To check out our new satellite images, just scroll down on the home page. Alternatively, open the page Current & Webcams. There you can use the control bar at the bottom of the animated image to step through individual frames. You can also open the images in full screen to see all the detail. Notice that in some regions the first timesteps also show precipitation. In regions where precipitation observations are less frequently updated later timesteps only show clouds.

New precipitation Radar for Europe

Precipitation radar maps for Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium are available on the meteoblue website since earlier this year. This is the first public composite for Scandinavia with data from 3 countries in one map, providing an overview for Sweden, Norway and Finland in a single image. The radar map is updated in real-time, presented in 5-minute time-steps, and also shows the currently observed temperatures and wind speeds. meteoblue uses the radar observation also for forecast correction.

We thank the providers of the radar data, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) for their support of Open Data. We appreciate this productive engagement of public and private weather services for the benefit of all stakeholders.

Last but not least, this year meteoblue introduced our proprietary radar-based short-term precipitation forecast for Switzerland, Germany, USA, Benelux, Spain, France, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Czechia and Romania.
The radar forecast map animation shows precipitation of the previous hour followed by a one to 1.5 hours forecast, depending on the region. This feature helps users with short-term planning and is especially useful if the forecast predictability for the day is low. Find a radar forecast animation on our pages 7-day weather and Current & Webcams.

meteoblue at the Meteorological Technology World Expo 2019 in Geneva

meteoblue has been present at the Meteorological Technology World Expo since the exhibition's beginning in 2011. This year the Meteo Expo took place in the meteoblue home country Switzerland. This, together with the 18th WMO Congress in Geneva, made the event very special.

We presented our ever growing, multi-dimension offer with our new blueCube, featuring our core capabilities:

  • Global Coverage: no place without weather data.
  • Unique Time Range: no hour without weather data - since 1984.
  • Top Precision: no doubts about accuracy - results publicly available.
  • Unique data range: >100 variables for multiple purposes, from agriculture to energy and air traffic.
  • Multiple sources: >30 models, best-in-class satellite images and millions of sensor data.
  • Easy access: access via web, App, API, and more: any point on Earth from 30 years back available in milliseconds.

Our meteoblue stand right at the entrance provided plenty opportunities to get in touch with numerous costumers and interested visitors of the exhibition. Many showed particular interest in our history+ product, giving access to the largest world-wide hourly weather data set available online. Many other areas of interest were discussed. The meteoblue offer was highly favourably received, adding to our confidence to develop our services further and bring them to more users.

meteoblue Day

This year everything revolved around water. The meteoblue Day led us from Basel the Rhine river upstream to hydroelectric power station Laufenburg. Hydro-power is one of the largest renewable energy sources in the world and in many cases is the most environmentally friendly option to produce energy. During a tour of power plant we were given a glimpse of the highly optimised turbines and learned a lot about the requirements and conditions for generating energy from water at an elevation difference.

Afterwards we went on the river to experience the power of water for ourselves. With several canoes we paddled, floated or swayed eleven kilometers downstream, with wonderful views of the surrounding landscape. Some indulged in a spot of battling on the water: at the end of the canoe trip not everyone had stayed dry. The barbecue afterwards warmed up everyone and fired the conversations, not few of them about working on new ideas.
