Better accuracy - better explained

Everybody claims that their weather data is accurate. We prove it by using several scientific methods to measure accuracy and by documenting the results publicly - on our new verification pages.

The latest update of our weather data accuracy pages brings additional analysis, updates of previous studies and a comparison of accuracy between meteoblue and different providers of weather forecast data.

In 2010, meteoblue started as the first weather data provider to document the accuracy of the data publicly on our website. We continued and expanded our philosophy of transparency in the last years by constantly enhancing and updating our verification studies.

To analyse the quality of weather forecast data, high-quality measurement data are required. That is why we have developed filters and other measurement quality checks. With these filters, we ensure complete and proper geographic information of the data, detection of data gaps, removal of outliers or incorrect timestamps and correction of other error sources. With this approach, we have included more than 10’000 global weather stations in the analysis (as shown on the map describing meteoblue temperature verification results). The methods and results are summarised on the new weather data accuracy overview page.

The new subpages include detailed analysis for the weather variables air temperature, precipitation, wind speed, radiation and dewpoint temperature. Various weather modelling approaches are explained on these pages, and their results are compared.

Moreover, the provider comparison of temperature, precipitation, and wind speed is a major addition to these pages. In this study, weather forecast data from various weather providers have been collected over one year and compared with measurements from almost 500 weather stations distributed worldwide.

We also allow everyone to check our forecast accuracy directly for the weather measurement station closest to their location - a unique service offered only by meteoblue - since 2018. The diagram shows the comparison of our mLM forecast calculated with the 00UTC run for the 0-23 forecast hours.

We are happy to present (and document) that the meteoblue weather forecast data achieves the highest publicly documented accuracy. Please write to us, if you find any examples of good performance, any errors, or any other sources which have better accuracy.
