After weeks of high pressure dominance in Central Europe, characterised by persistent fog in the lowlands of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany, and sunny weather at higher altitudes, a change in the weather is expected in the coming days (from November 19, 2024 onwards). On Tuesday, the low pressure system "Quiteria" will move from Iceland towards northern Germany and further south, bringing with it colder polar air, strong winds of 70 to 90 km/h (with even higher speeds in the mountains) and precipitation, including snowfall at higher altitudes. This can also be seen in our wind animation and sea level pressure maps.
A cold front is expected to move across Central Europe on Tuesday night and Wednesday. As a result, the snowline will drop to lower elevations, bringing snow to the Alps and some lowland areas. This is illustrated in our accumulated snowfall map. The screenshot shows the total snowfall expected by Wednesday (2024-11-20).
By mid-week, the precipitation in the Alps will ease up before more snow arrives over the weekend. Meanwhile, Germany will experience a mix of snow and rain throughout the week. However, this brief winter interlude at lower altitudes is likely to come to an end as temperatures are expected to rise again from next weekend onwards.
Some ski resorts are already preparing for winter or have already started the season. Our ski weather overview, which is displayed on our start page when a ski resort is nearby, gives you all the relevant information about the resort. The dedicated ski weather page provides essential information about the ski resort. It includes a detailed map of all slopes, snow conditions, an overview of the slopes and lifts, and contact information. It is, therefore, an excellent tool for planning your ski day.
