The IBIWAM wave model has been upgraded to an exceptional 2.5 km resolution, providing highly detailed wave predictions from the Canary Islands in the south to the coasts of Ireland in the north. This improvement enables greater accuracy in forecasting wave height, direction, and period — critical factors for both professional and recreational surfers. Greater Detail for Optimal Wave Selection

Powered by data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and provided through Copernicus Marine Services, the refined model captures subtle yet essential differences between local wind-driven waves and long-traveling swell waves. This enhanced precision is particularly valuable at world-renowned big-wave locations such as Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal (pictured above), where recent swells have produced some of the largest waves on record. Understanding the interaction between wind shifts and swell direction is essential for optimising performance.
