,FIRE WEATHER WATCH WEDNESDAY FROM 11 AM UNTIL 8 PM ALONG AND EAST OF THE CENTRAL MOUNTAIN CHAIN BELOW SNOWPACK DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND VERY LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY,

  • A dangerous and critical fire weather pattern will unfold today as strong to severe winds, warmer temperatures, very low humidity and unstable conditions combine. All of northern and central New Mexico is expected to observe these critical conditions today, but the strongest winds will be focused over and near the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The lowest humidity will be found in central to eastern areas of the state where readings of less than 10 percent will persist for several hours.

While critical conditions are forecast to improve this evening, breezy to windy conditions will redevelop on Wednesday, leading to another possible bout of fire weather in central to eastern areas New Mexico with a focus in Torrance, San Miguel and Guadalupe counties.

  • AREA AND TIMING: Northwest Plateau (Zone 101), West Central Mountains (Zone 105), Middle Rio Grande Valley (Zone 106), West Central Basin and Range (Zone 109), North Central Mountains (Zone 120), and the Upper Rio Grande and Lower Chama River Valleys (Zone 121) from 10 AM until 9 PM Tuesday.

  • 20 FOOT WINDS: West 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

  • RELATIVE HUMIDITY: Between 5 and 12 percent.

  • IMPACTS: Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The Flood Advisory continues for the following rivers in New Mexico

Rio Chama Below Abiquiu Dam affecting Rio Arriba County.

  • Snow melt and increased reservoir releases will cause the river flows to become high. Expect minor flooding downstream from the dam.

  • WHAT: Flooding caused by snowmelt continues.

  • WHERE: Rio Chama Below Abiquiu Dam.

  • WHEN: Until further notice.

  • IMPACTS: At 4.8 feet, Bankfull Stage. Approximately 1460 cfs. Houses near Highway 84 along river will see water begin to encroach their yards. Cattle that cross the river at lower flows may be trapped on one side or the other. If flows out of the Rio Ojo Caliente are 550 cfs or higher properties near and below the confluence with the Rio Chama may encroachment of water onto land immediately adjacent to the river along with bank erosion. At 5.4 feet, Initial flood stage. Approximately 1900cfs Farms and properties along the river will see overbank flooding and encroachment of water into low lying areas. If Rio Ojo Caliente is running at 550cfs or greater properties near the confluence with Rio Chama will see overbank flooding, bank erosion and impacts to structures immediately adjacent to the river. Fishing spots and picnic areas below Abiquiu Dam will be inaccessible.

Properties immediately adjacent to the river upstream of the bridge on SR-74 and especially near the junction with the Rio Ojo Caliente may see water encroach onto low lying areas. At 6.0 feet, Properties in the flood plain along the Rio Chama and near the junction of the Rio Ojo Caliente will see water in their yards. Impacts can include bank erosion and damage to wells and septic tanks. These impacts will increase in severity at higher river levels.
