Flood Watch issued May 2 at 10:12AM AST until May 5 at 6:00PM AST by NWS San Juan PR
Severe
Upcoming
From Tomorrow 06:00 (9 hours from now)
Until Today 22:00 (1 hour from now)
Official warning explanations:

There is an increasing risk for Flash Flooding Friday and early this weekend due to favorable atmospheric conditions resulting in periods of heavy rainfall as well as saturated soils and rivers above normal levels

  • WHAT: Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

  • WHERE: Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • WHEN: From Friday morning through Sunday afternoon.

  • IMPACTS: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

    • A trough combined with deep moisture across the local area will bring periods of showers and thunderstorms across the local islands during the next several days, particularly Friday through at least Sunday.

Based on the latest guidance, the most likely time period for the heaviest rainfall activity is Friday afternoon into Saturday. The areas most likely to receive the highest rainfall accumulations are portions of the southeast and east sections of Puerto Rico, as well as Vieques, Culebra and the US Virgin Islands.

Rainfall accumulations are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches, especially for the eastern half of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands with isolated higher amounts possible between 6 and 8 inches. Elsewhere, 1 to 3 inches are expected.

Due to already saturated soils, any prolonged period of heavy rainfall will result in urban and small stream flooding. Some rivers will likely overflow their banks. Therefore, Isolated life threatening flash flooding and mudslides are possible as well.
